After your consultation with Dr. Bernett a plan will be formulated and you will be given an explanation about what to expect during your surgery. Before surgery, the areas will be marked for the proposed incision to achieve the contours desired. For adults, usually local anesthesia is used along with oral sedation. For children, general anesthesia is generally used. Your heart will be closely monitored throughout the procedure. The surgery itself involves cartilage reconstruction through an incision and then skin closure. After the procedure you will have an external ear pressure dressing on for 2-3 days.
Dr. Bernett provides excellent ear-shaping procedures for different types of deformities. Generally, there are two types of ear deformities. The first type is called “lop ear deformity” and involves the upper part of the ear drooping downward due to loss of the ear cartilage fold. The other type is called “cup ear deformity” and it involves a cup like cartilage bowl near the ear canal that causes the ear to project excessively.
Dr. Bernett is meticulous about reshaping the ears to achieve the desired contour and thus achieving an esthetic appearance of the ears as she has had this surgery itself and understands the insecurities that can be brought about by having protruding ears that are hard to conceal in day to day life.
